"Big Arm Movements" and losing your temper on the job in Denmark
The audiobook version of "How to Work in Denmark" is out now, and in Chapter 1 we talk about what the Danes call "Big Arm Movements." In many cultures, it shows commitment and enthusiasm to be passionate about a subject, maybe raise your voice, maybe wave your arms around to make a point, maybe lose your temper if someone has been treated unfairly. But this is not true in Denmark, where losing your temper is a sign that you are childish, can't control yourself, and are basically untrustworthy.
