A cell can divide into two cells, each of which can also divide into two, and so on through time, to create a population of cells called a clone. All the cells within a clone are genetically identical. Cell division is an integral part of the growth of multicellular organisms, and it is also the basis of reproduction. A cell that is about to divide is called a mother cell, and the products of division are called daughter cells.
