Light machine guns began capturing the hearts and minds of soldiers as early as World War I. Since then, this family of weapons has developed dynamically throughout the world. The Soviet Union was no exception. Take the 7.62 caliber light machine gun, developed in 1928 by Vasily Alexandrovich Degtyarev, for example. In 1949, the new RPD-44 entered service with the Soviet Army, and 60 years ago, it was replaced by what is arguably the most important domestic light machine gun, the Kalashnikov.
