Site Architecture
In this video, we begin by discussing what a proper site architecture looks like. A clear site architecture helps organize your website. Not only does this help crawlers understand how different pages of your site relate to each other, but it also gives users a more intuitive experience. Research shows that flatter site architectures tend to outperform deep site architectures. After all, you don’t want to bury relevant pages 10 clicks away from your homepage. So if your website doesn’t have an organized structure, fix that now. And aim for a flatter structure for maximum SEO gains.
URL Structure
By optimizing your URL structure, you can make it easier for bots and humans to understand what the page is about. A good URL structure is one that keeps its keywords close to the root domain, follows the proper site architecture, and isn’t too long, otherwise it’ll get truncated when it’s being displayed on SERPs.
Meta Titles and Description
Your meta titles and description act like a short sales pitch for your webpage and can help bots and humans understand what your page is about. Moreover, if users click on your page, that sends signals to Google that your page is relevant – which can improve your rankings.
Be Mobile-First
Making your website responsive for different devices not only helps with the user experience but is a significant ranking factor for Google. Back in 2018, Google introduced mobile-first indexing, which means that the crawling and indexing of your website would be based on your mobile version.
Page Speed
Most of the ranking factors from Google are based on making the user experience as smooth and convenient as possible. And a major part of that experience is how fast your website loads. Generally speaking, the main culprits for high load times are too many HTTPS requests and poorly optimized images on your webpage. In this video, we show you how to address these issues and significantly improve your page speed.
Secure Website
This is a relatively simple tip. Add an SSL certificate and ensure you’re managing a secure website. Google has said that it uses HTTPS as a ranking signal. SSL certificates can be easily bought from GoDaddy, Bluehost or any other service.
Header Tags
Header tags improve your readability and UX. And the proper use of H2 tags can help you score featured snippets, which can often be the difference between ranking #1 and, say #5, on search results.
Readability
Highly readable content helps you retain readers for a longer period, and can give you an edge over the competition. In this video, we share our list of key characteristics for high-readability content.
Alt-Text
Not only does Alt Text help with your rankings on Google Images – which can help bring more traffic your way - it’s also a good way for you to naturally use keywords that haven’t been used in your content. Moreover, it helps ensure that people who are visually impaired or may have other physical or cognitive disabilities can access and understand visual content such as images, charts, and graphs easily, which means you’re making your content more accessible to everyone.
Internal Links
By adding internal links, you’re letting users and crawlers understand how different pages are related to each other. And internal links also allow you to pass on valuable link equity to these pages.
Schema Markups
Schemas are little snippets of code that allow you to show additional information on SERPS, such as reviews, product availability, FAQs, organizational details, and more.
So that covers our introduction to on-page optimization. In the next video of this series, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about Off-Page SEO.
