The term “Cultural Cannibalism” was invented by the Brazilian avant-garde poet Oswald
de Andrade. He presented the culture of Brazil and Latin America in his 1928 “Anthropophagic Manifesto” as cannibalistic towards Europe and the world at large. He proposed an
active, “cannibalistic” consumption of foreign culture, similar to the Tupi tribe that inhabited the Amazon rainforest, ate the flesh of European colonizers to adopt their knowledge
and technology.
Cultural interaction in ancient times often bore such cannibalistic features. This is confirmed by the ancient works of art of the peoples of the Middle East and Asia Minor, created
according to the Greek and Roman models before these peoples adopted Arab influence.
Cultural boundaries in the modern global world have thinned to ghostly outlines. And we
are all just cannibals involved in the construction of the Tower of Babel.
