NINE MILES OF SMILES - A film by Kevin Tablizo
Back in February, during my last semester as a dental technology student, I joined an organization called Nine Miles of Smiles. It is a non-profit healthcare volunteer organization that provides dental care to under-serviced areas of Jamaica.
Aside from my educational background in law enforcement, I am now also a trained dental technologist. To become a part of this initiative however, one of our coordinating professors typically takes the best of the students who signed up for the trip. I was not one of those students. In fact, I was far from it. I did however feel a calling to step up and be a part of this initiative. I might not have been the best in my field of dentistry, but I felt a calling to provide help in my own way. I was not new in the world of volunteering to help provide humanitarian aid to people in developing countries. I knew awareness is always a major factor for these organizations to receive help. That is where I wanted to help. With the use of photography and filmmaking.
Over the past few months, I’ve been working on our Nine Miles of Smiles short film. The experience as a whole has been very fulfilling, and has proven to be a humbling reminder to be thankful for the privileges we’ve been able to receive here at home. You never come second by putting other people first.
This is Nine Miles of Smiles.
