In the fall of 2014, Philadelphia Jazz Project began the development of PJP Mixtape Series; Sun Ra Edition honoring the immeasurable genius of the late Philadelphia, visionary musician, composer and band leader, Sun Ra and his enduring influence in the music and the culture.
Between 2015 and 2017, seven mixtapes were recorded and released containing over 50 compositions featuring over 100 different artists. This unique challenge provided an exciting opportunity for DJs, producers, musicians, singers, poets, rappers and others to spread their wings. The music includes magical moments of avant-garde Jazz, Poetry, Funk, Hiphop, Rock, Sun Ra classics and more.
