Big Crow, a Northern Cheyenne warrior, was one of three warriors who found a box of U.S army hardtack on the prairie, the box had fallen from a wagon of the 7th Cavalry when they were just miles from the huge Indian village on the little Bighorn. The box was noticed missing, and fearing that there presence would become known they sent Sergeant Curtis and a small detachment back to find it, seeing the approach of the soldiers the warriors galloped off over a rise back to the village.
Custer was informed of this information and realising he had lost the element of surprise, it became one of the reasons that Instead of attacking at dawn, with rested troops, he charged in with trail weary troops in broad daylight, with no knowledge of the lie of the land or the numbers of warriors present. It would be a mistake that cost his life and the men of 5 of the 12 companies in the battle.
