C-1 Trader vs. C-2 Greyhound: The Mail Planes That Fed the Fleet
The Grumman C-1 Trader and C-2 Greyhound never had the glamour of fighter jets—but without them, U.S. Navy carriers would have been stranded at sea. These were the unsung heroes of naval aviation—the mail planes that brought spare parts, passengers, fresh coffee, and a lifeline to the outside world.
The C-1 Trader was born from the S-2 Tracker and became the last piston-powered aircraft to operate from American carrier decks. Slow, noisy, and cramped, it still earned a legendary reputation because it brought something no fighter could: mail from home.
Its successor, the C-2 Greyhound, took over the Carrier Onboard Delivery (COD) mission with bigger engines, higher payload, and long-range reliability. For over 50 years, it connected carriers to land, delivering everything from jet engines to Christmas care packages. Now being phased out for the CMV-22B Osprey, the C-2 is making its final runs after decades of quiet service.
This is the story of two aircraft that didn’t fight wars—but kept the fleet alive.
