Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide are currently illegal in the Republic of Ireland. In recent years, many activists have advocated for their legalisation on the grounds of patient bodily autonomy and agency in choosing when to end one's life with dignity. These values are important in a world where rights over one's bodily autonomy are undermined.
Those who wish to maintain its illegality stress a potential 'slippery slope' effect whereby patients may undergo involuntary euthanasia. Arguments on both sides go back to foundational medical ethics, what constitutes aid, and if there can truly be a 'good death'.
