The succession laws of European monarchies vary. Most follow absolute primogeniture, where the eldest child, regardless of sex, inherits the crown. Sweden was the first country to adopt this rule, followed by the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg, and the United Kingdom.
Despite its nearly thousand-year-old monarchy, the United Kingdom, like the Netherlands, was one of the only countries to never prevent women from reigning. Countries like Spain and Monaco still maintain a preference for male heirs. But it's important to remember that these changes are more than simple movements; they reflect the evolution of women's role in society and the modernization of institutions.
