When Johnell Allen-Bey, the regional coordinator of Nation Outside's Flint Chapter, began registering incarcerated people to vote in Flint, Mich., he discovered they didn't always get the opportunity to cast their ballots on election day.
"Throughout Michigan, there were over 10,000 people that were eligible to vote," Allen-Bey said. "We're like, 'Hold on. These people are being disenfranchised.'"
This video is part of a series raising awareness about the systemic barriers returning citizens face after they're released from incarceration and what works to help them succeed despite those obstacles. This series was produced in partnership with Brown Impact Media Group and Nation Outside, a grassroots advocacy organization led by formerly incarcerated people throughout Michigan.
