Here is one of our board-certified surgeons explaining limitations in fat Removal and injection.
Liposuction and fat injection are popular cosmetic procedures, but it's important to understand their limitations. Liposuction, designed for fat removal and body contouring, is not a weight-loss solution. It's ideal for removing localized fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise, but it cannot address obesity or significantly reduce overall body weight. Additionally, there are limits to the volume of fat that can be safely removed in one session, typically around 5 liters.

Fat injection, or fat grafting, involves transferring fat from one area of the body to another to enhance volume and contour. While effective for facial rejuvenation, breast augmentation, and buttock enhancement, the success of fat grafting depends on the survival of the transferred fat cells. Not all injected fat survives; some may be reabsorbed by the body, necessitating multiple sessions to achieve desired results. Moreover, the amount of fat that can be injected is limited by the recipient site’s capacity to support new tissue without complications.

Both procedures carry risks and potential complications, including infection, uneven results, and changes in skin sensation. It’s crucial to have realistic expectations and to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss individual goals, potential outcomes, and the inherent limitations of these cosmetic treatments.
