Join me as we watch the uprooting and replanting of a large succulent tree: Beaucarnea recurvata (ponytail palm). "Betty" is a stunning specimen: ten to 12 years old, nicely branched, 7 feet tall, with a 3-foot-diameter, half-ton caudex (swollen base).
You'll marvel at how Laura Eubanks and her Design for Serenity team dug, loaded and hauled off the hefty tree in about 15 minutes. You'll also see Betty's re-homing the next day in the new owner's garden.
Despite its common name, Beaucarnea recurvata is not a palm. It's from Mexico and more closely related to agaves and yuccas. The onion-shaped caudex stores water and nutrients that the plant lives on as necessary (which is why it's succulent).
Obviously you need the right spot for this easy-care landscape enhancement that has tons---no pun intended---of personality. Hm. How about putting one in your living room? I'm not kidding---small specimens make great houseplants and conversation starters. A topknot tree will sit for years in a pot, enlarging imperceptibly, needing almost no care or water.
