In this 8-minute video Dr. Pamela M. Donnelly introduces the College Access Allies initiative now launching in states across the US.
Discover why kin networks (really) matter and how your school or nonprofit organization can leverage allies trainings to secure student outcomes.
An overview: kin networks are defined as systems consisting of extended family, including people connected through marriage, blood, or what is called “self-ascribed association”, including foster family members and fictive kin.
According to research by Bowen & Bok in 2016, for students from disadvantaged backgrounds these affiliations center around belief systems that rarely champion notions of upward mobility through higher education.
Why does this matter? Because without effective incorporation of kin networks, college access initiatives for disadvantaged students are far less likely to succeed.
