The blizzard is petering out after pounding eastern Connecticut Tuesday with heavy snow and howling winds but sparing western portions of the state.

The governor's travel ban was lifted at 2 p.m.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced the loosened restriction during a noon briefing in Hartford, where the sun was trying to come out. He also said Metro North railroad was to start running trains on a Sunday schedule at 1 p.m.

"We are through the worst of the storm," Malloy said at the briefing in the state armory.

There were 15 accidents on state roads since the ban went into effect, he said, calling the low number "remarkable."

All state employees will return to work on Wednesday, although non-essential workers will not report Tuesday evening, Malloy said.

Meteorologists say the nor'easter stayed about 75 to 100 miles east of its forecast track. A National Weather Service forecaster in New Jersey tweeted an apology for the errant forecast.

The eastern part of the state was hit harder than the central and western parts. Some towns in the northeast reported more than 2 feet of snow, but less than 6 inches had fallen in much of the west by noon. Snow continued to fall in eastern Connecticut well into the afternoon.
