How We Calculate Our Discount Rate
We calculate our discount rate by using the historical average total return of the s&p 500 since 1926
This total returns includes reinvested dividends
We use this method because we believe we should expect a higher return on an individual common stock than we would if we had just invested in an index fund of the s&p 500
This is by no means a risk free rate though as the returns can be quite volatile
