And as if that wasn't enough, Jimmy has also provided his essential Family Friendly Halloween Films List, which is as follows:

The Uninvited. 1944. Spookily romantic Sunday afternoon ghost story set in England. Starring Ray Milland.

The Haunting. 1963. Elegant ghost story based on the novel ‘The Haunting of Hill House’. Classy direction from Robert Wise. Intense B&W photography and good ensemble cast.

Night of the Eagle [aka Burn Witch Burn] 1962. Mostly forgotten supernatural drama directed stylishly by Sy Sidney veteran Sidney Havers Sidney Directed by veteran Sidney Havers, starring Peter Wyngarde [Jason King] as a schoolteacher who inadvertently marries a witch. Janet Blair is a very enticing witch, with a cast of British veterans all giving vivid performances. A real hidden gem.

Night of the Demon. 1958. Iconic British horror wonderfully directed by genius Jaques Tourneur [Cat People]. Despite an underpowered performance from lead Dana Andrews this movie has developed a well-deserved cult following. It’s intense and scary, with a wonderful performance from the smooth-voiced Niall MaCguiness as an Aleister Crowley-type devil worshipper who is stalking our sceptical hero.

Poltergeist. 1982. Still the ultimate family viewing experience. Perfect for tweenagers of all ages. Heartwarming fantasy of family love and demons from the ‘other side’. Well cast with real chemistry between Craig T Nelson and Jobeth Williams as mom and dad. Surprisingly directed by Tobe Hooper of Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame. Not gory at all [except for one scene where a guy pulls his own face off, but that scene felt out of place]. Great halloween watch.

The Woman in Black. 2012. Starring Harry Potter [Daniel Radcliffe ] as a young lawyer looking after a spooky estate. A relaunch for Hammer Studios. An old-fashioned ghost story, beautifully photographed and full of atmosphere. The ultimate ghost story for Halloween ??

The Innocents. 1961. The best ghost story of them all. Atmospherically directed by Jack Cardiff. Based on the novel ‘The Turn of the Screw’ by Henry James. Wonderfully acted by Deborah Kerr. It’s subtle, quiet, and very, very spooky. Great acting from the children too. So much is boiling under the smooth placid surface. Can be watched over and over again. Brilliant. Happy Halloween !

Big Love and Happy Halloween 🎃, UB40
