From a construction standpoint, bearings are classified as ball, roller, or needle bearings, depending on whether they use balls, rollers with a diameter similar to that of the balls, or needles with a diameter of a few millimeters as rolling elements.
Bearings can be divided into two categories based on their construction: rigid bearings and self-aligning bearings.
Rigid bearings do not allow any inclination of the journal axis with respect to the axis of their housing; therefore, they are used where coaxiality is absolutely guaranteed, with no misalignment permitted.
Reverse-aligning bearings, on the other hand, allow good shaft rotation even if there is a misalignment, obviously within fairly narrow limits, between the journal axis and the housing axis.
