Hollow Knight Fun Fact #2: There is a lore reason as to why signs and destructible items are fixed when you leave and re-enter a room. This is because a very specific NPC called the Menderbug fixes the signs.
The Menderbug has a 2% chance to show up after you destroy a sign and re-enter a room.
Once you have ended the Menderbug, his house will open up. It can be found to the left of Sly's house in dirtmouth.
Once in the house, the Menderbug has a journal that you can read.
Just note that after the menderbug is gone, the signs will no longer be repaired.
