60 Second Cinematography - Outdoor Interview - Controlling harsh sunlight
This was an interview where we were very limited by needing to shoot as soon as we arrived at the location so we had time to get out on the water to do the shots of the boat.
That meant we just had to go with the time of day, the background was also a consideration and basically we wanted a bit of the sea!
All of those factors meant ended up with the sun flat on to our talent and super harsh. To combat this we used a 2m*2m Lastolite Skylite frame with 1.25 stop diffusion. That level of diffusion can make the subject feel too down in level against a bright background and also gave a very flat look. To sit them more comfortably in the scene we used a 2m Neg on the right of the shot and a silver bounce to give some edge on the left of their faces. This edge gave a bit of the feel of light skipping off water and helped to sit them in the scene with a more interesting contrasty look.
Not perfect but certainly has a better vibe than anything we could have achieved without modifying the light!
