A Step Too Far: Why Trelion Solar Park Threatens Cornwall's Countryside

For over 200 years, the community of Cornwall’s Clay Country has witnessed a landscape transformed, and at times scarred, by industry. The clay mines have brought jobs and economic stability, but at a steep cost to the region’s natural beauty and green spaces. And now, Cornwall faces a new challenge.

EDF, a French company, proposes the largest solar park the area has ever seen—a sprawling 200-acre development set on prime farmland. This proposed Trelion Solar Park dwarfs other nearby installations, surpassing the size of Saint Stephen’s village itself. With eight solar sites already established in the area, this new expansion feels like a tipping point. Cornwall Council has policies to prevent cumulative environmental degradation, yet pressures to meet renewable energy targets may complicate their decisions.

The project comes with a heavy price tag for the community: tenant farmers face eviction, vital local economic contributions will be lost, and the new solar site—four times larger than others in the area—will be visible from over 80% of Saint Stephen’s Parish. Imagine the view—one side scarred by clay waste, the other dominated by a “sea of black glass.”

This isn't just another project; it's a step too far for a community that has already borne the brunt of industrialisation. Now, Cornwall Council faces a choice: protect the landscape and livelihoods or allow yet another development that risks tipping the scales.

Help Us Make a Stand: Lodge your opposition to the Trelion Solar Park on Cornwall Council's website. Together, we can protect Cornwall’s green spaces and hold developers accountable.
