see below for explanation on how Coloring helps determine gender. In this series of pics of Min, the criteria falls in between Mom and Dad and it could be argued either way. It is very difficult to determine. if you have an opinion please comment, we'd appreciate input.
We get a good look in Color at Finley and Charli. Based on the coloring on Chest and thick legs it is clear Charli is a female. She has very dark Coloring on her chest with many spots, and the brown Feathers Are even on her legs. We have been back and forth on guessing Finley's gender, originally thinking male, then based on size and Feathers beginning to darken some, and dark around neck and sides, we tentatively thought female. Based on seeing Finley's chest Coloring (white) and moderate spots on the Chest it could be Finley is an unusually large male. If you look here - • Barn Owls Bonding. Owl Box (Corral) - 2/2... you can see their parents. Finley falls between them as far as coloring is concerned so it still isn't definitive.
We are happy each night to see the owlets at the house and to see how bonded they are with each other.
I have some trouble telling them apart because we are seeing them mostly in black and white, and there is some over exposure with the camera. Also the sizes vary depending on where they stand on the perch.
We are still enjoying that Owlets are still here, and we are seeing how the brooding season progresses. We are also preparing ourselves for the time they move on.
