US Marines Deploy To Haiti
Yesterday US marines deployed to Haiti overnight to airlift U.S. embassy staff out of the country and have joined security forces to reinforce the embassy. Gangs have nearly overrun Haiti’s capital and the government is on the verge of collapse. The government has essentially lost all credibility and power, and now gangs are left to impose their will on the people. The U.S. has ruled out using troops to restore order to the nation like it has in the past, saying that they are enabling and encouraging international partners to resolve it themselves. The U.S. has also called on the prime minister to commit to a transitional government and set up elections. Haiti has been requesting foreign troops for over two years now and only really Kenya has answered the call. The US has agreed to finance the deployment of 1,000 Kenya police officers, including some more from other countries but the plan continues to be delayed. Of the 15,000 Haitian police officers in the country, over 3,000 of them have fled and Human Right advocates have accused them of colluding with gangs. The UN Security Council urged Haiti’s gangs to immediately cease their actions and the US is meeting with Caribbean nations today at an emergency meeting in Jamaica. The country is falling into complete and total anarchy, it’s a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
