Once the 4th largest discount chain in the United States, Zayre set the standard for middle-income shoppers. As they ventured further into specialty retail, starting with their buyout of Hit or Miss in '69, Zayre's "Fabulous Dept. Stores" began to drop in quality. It ultimately gave way to a new business model, altogether, and not a moment too soon. With Zayre, the best was yet to come...
