Members of the Austin Baroque Orchestra & Chorus perform "Ist Gott für uns," one of Heinrich Schütz's "Kleine gesitliche Konzerte" ("Little Sacred Concerts") published in 1639 in Dresden. The text is from Paul's Epistle to the Romans and is fairly well-known ("If God be for us, who can be against us?"). The Saxon electoral court's coffers were drained by the Thirty Years' War, and as a result many of the musicians were dismissed during that time. As a result, Schütz took to composing small-scale works for voices with simple accompaniment, such as this piece for four voices and basso continuo (here performed by viola da gamba, organ, and theorbo).

Recorded at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Austin, TX, on May 22, 2021.
