#1: Request an Increase Online
Now, this one is going to depend on what company you have your credit card with but most of them allow you to log into your account either on their website or through their app, answer a few short questions, and instantly be approved or denied for a credit limit increase. And personally, I used this method to 20X my credit limit with discover. When I first got my discover it card when I turned 18 my credit limit was just $250 but by logging onto the discover app every few months and requesting a credit limit increase, I was able to get my Discover it credit limit all the way up to $5,000 just a few years later. Just by switching from the Discover it secured card to the unsecured option, my credit limit went from $250 up to $1000 immediately and from there you can request those automatic increases every few months and you’ll have a really high credit limit in no time.
#2: Call and Ask for an Increase
Typically the phone number is on the back of your credit card and this one is pretty simple. You call them up, they'll probably ask you a few questions about your income and why you want an increase and they should be able to tell you immediately whether or not they can approve you for a higher credit limit.
#3: Automatic Increases
Most companies will automatically increase your credit limit once you've had a card for a certain amount of time or if they see that you are typically using a significant percentage of your current available credit so while this one won't happen immediately and you would have to call them or request an increase through the app, sometimes you might find that your credit limit is suddenly higher without you having to do anything so that's another thing to keep in mind as well.
#4: Apply for a New Credit Card.
Be careful with this one because applying for a ton of new credit cards can be really bad for your credit score and would negate any benefit that you get out of having that higher credit limit however applying for one new credit card might temporarily drop your credit score a few points but this usually doesn't last very long and this is definitely the fastest way to significantly increase your credit limit. So let's say you started with the Discover it credit card and you currently have a credit limit of just $1000 but you don't want to wait for those incremental increases. Well knowing that you've had that card for some time, you've built up some good credit history and shown that you are a reputable borrower, you are now probably eligible for a number of other credit cards that you may have not qualified for previously. So in my case, I had the Discover It credit card for several years and then decided to apply for the SoFi credit card which increased my total credit limit by several $1000. And after having that card for a while, I then applied for the American express gold card just last week, and that significantly increased my credit limit because American Express cards are more like a charge card where there isn't necessarily a hard limit.
