After excelling in a prison compost program while serving a 23-month sentence, John Williams now runs it, as an employee of Bennett Compost. The program teaches inmates how to convert food scraps from one of five Philly prisons into nutrient-rich soil. Williams said, “Compost gives me a sense of hope.” The initiative is good for the environment, saves the city hundreds of thousands of dollars, and offers people like Williams a chance to help themselves and others.
