Craig Stevens was cooler thanThe Fonz. It's a biological fact. What is interesting is how even though he starred in four different series and made over a hundred movie and TV guest star appearances, he is only remembered for one thing: "PETER GUNN". It is a role that transcends anything he ever did before or since.
Craig Stevens had options in how he could have played the character. He could have been Cary Grant or Mike Hammer or even Richard Diamond, as that was the character he was supposedly reprising. However, John Vivyan did the Cary Grant bit, Mike Hammer was too down-class, and Diamond's best girlfriend was a voice and a pair of legs over the telephone. Gunn had Lola Albright singing her heart out to him and showering him with love and affection that seemed so genuine that it ruined seeing him with any other woman afterwards...it was like watching him cheat.
I cannot say enough good things about Craig Stevens and "PETER GUNN." Ironically, he guest-starred opposite Henry Winkler as his future father-in-law in an episode of "HAPPY DAYS." The two coolest guys ever together at once. I think my TV froze solid.
