C126 Mercedes-Benz 1000 SEC by Carat Duchatelet, 1984
Legend has it that in the early 1980s, a customer from the Middle East ordered a heavily tuned version of the 500 SEL from Chris Hahn of SGS Styling Garage, with many options from the tuner. When the SEL was delivered, the customer told Chris that the car was twice as good as the regular 500 SEL and deserved a proper name. This is how the first 1000 SEL was reportedly born. Carat by Duchatelet, based in Liège, was famous for its very lavish conversions based on Mercedes or Rolls-Royce models. Carat was on good terms with the German manufacturer, and unlike other tuners, Carat's cars were authorized by Mercedes to retain the symbol of the three-pointed star. This unique 1000 SEC is full of exclusive options: it has a refrigerator, a bar with two crystal decanters and matching glasses, a color TV, a VCR and a Pioneer cassette player connected to a hi-fi system with an equalizer.
