On the second day of the leave-taking of the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Holy Church commemorates the miraculous appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos to St. Sergius of Radonezh. The appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos occurred on one of the Fridays of the Nativity Fast of 1385 in St. Sergius's cell, which stood on the site of today's Serapion Chamber of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. Late at night, St. Sergius was reading the Akathist to the Mother of God. After completing his prayer rule, he sat down to rest for a while, but suddenly said to his cell attendant, Micah, "Be awake, my child, for we shall have a wondrous visitation." As soon as he uttered these words, a voice rang out, "The Most Pure One is coming." St. Sergius hurried from his cell to the vestibule, where he was suddenly illuminated by a bright light. He saw the Most Holy Theotokos, accompanied by the Apostles Peter and John. The elder, unable to bear the wondrous radiance, bowed before the Mother of God, and She said to him: "Fear not, My chosen one! I have come to visit you. You pray for your disciples, and your prayer has been heard. I will continually abide in this place, and even after your departure, it will abound with everything."
