Thrive in Simple Living
1 Timothy 6:3–10
Paul just finished teaching about giving respect to the church leaders, who lead well, labor in preaching and teaching, and living a life of integrity. Paul also gave the reason as to why believers must respect corporate leaders so that the Word will not be maligned. The practice of respecting the corporate leaders is by giving your best on what you are doing for God’s glory (1 Timothy 5:17–6:2).
Since Paul talked about respect and remuneration for church leaders, he proceeded to say that the motive behind the ministry is not to gain money. The false teachers, who do not subscribe to sound doctrine, they teach as a means of gain (vv. 3–5a). The issue with false teachers back then were greediness. On the contrary the work of the ministry is for godliness and not for greediness (1 Timothy 6:6–10).
The principle here is that our life must be characterized by simple living.
I. The Warning against Greediness for Material Wealth (vv. 6–7, 9–10).
A. Material wealth does not bring contentment (v. 6).
B. Material wealth has no eternal value (v. 7).
C. The desire for more wealth leads to sin (vv. 9–10).
II. The Antidote to Greediness is Simple Living (v. 8).
