LIGHTHOUSE 26 Floorplan
The LIGHTHOUSE 26 is the perfect home for
couples transitioning into family life.
The first home that my wife and I built together
had a traditional rectangular footprint, with a
backyard as the main outdoor space.
As our first born transitioned from an infant to
a toddler, our backyard quickly became her
favourite place to spend time. Whilst we loved
spending as much time outdoors with her as
possible, we would inevitably need to complete
chores throughout the house, or simply need
some time to sit back and relax indoors.
The challenge that we faced was that our
daughter would only play outside if we were with
her or if she could see that we were watching her
from inside the house. Unfortunately, our floorplan
did not provide line of sight to the backyard from
the kitchen or the main living area, which made
supervising our daughter, whilst completing life’s
daily tasks, quite difficult.
This challenge inspired me to design a house
with a courtyard floorplan, effectively allowing
our daughter to enjoy playing outside whilst we
were able to watch her from the kitchen and living
spaces throughout the home. The courtyard was
designed with the dual purpose of improving line
of sight throughout the home, whilst allowing you
to create separate living zones. Sliding doors
between the courtyard and backyard can be kept
closed to create separate spaces for play and
relaxation, or they can be opened to create one
large free-flowing entertaining space.
