Ureteral stones. How to determine if surgery is needed?
When it comes to breaking up ureteral stones, lithotripsy is used: laser, ultrasound, or electrohydraulic. This method is used for stones larger than 6 mm. In the most severe cases, ureterolithotomy is performed—an open or laparoscopic procedure (through openings in the abdominal wall). Indications for this procedure include:
stones larger than 1 cm that do not respond to conservative treatment;
severe renal colic that is not relieved by any medication;
a stone that does not move down the ureter at all;
obstruction of a solitary kidney;
failure of lithotripsy and other similar treatments.
The specific treatment method is determined solely by a urologist based on the clinical presentation.
