The Parchman Prison Prayer’s debut album in 2023 was met with unexpected global acclaim, which lead Grammy-winning producer and author, Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Zomba Prison Project, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, The Good Ones [Rwanda]), return to Mississippi for a second time.
Twelve men participated for the second recording, ranging in age from 23 to 74. Three are serving life sentences and six of them were newer arrivals or not on the debut album. There were no guards or chaplains present this time.
The advance single, “Parchman Prison Blues,” was the last song recorded that day. Six of the men huddled together and improvised a wordless expression of their pain and longing.
All tracks were recorded in 100% live, first takes and without overdubs over the course of just a few hours. As with the first album, any and all artist proceeds benefit the prison chaplain program.
