This film tells the story of a battle between 800 Chinese soldiers against tens of thousands of Japanese soldiers in 1937 in the city of Shanghai.
The dark history of the Shanghai War began in 1931 when Japanese troops invaded Manchuria and formed a puppet state known as Manchukuo. In 1932, Japan invaded Shanghai in an attempt to expand its area of influence in China. Fierce battles between Japanese and Chinese troops occurred in this area and ended with Japan's victory after three months of fighting.
The second Shanghai War broke out in 1937, when an incident known as the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in Shanghai triggered a war between China and Japan. This conflict became part of World War II and lasted for three years until 1940. Fierce and brutal fighting took place in the city of Shanghai and the surrounding area, including air raids that destroyed many important buildings and infrastructure.
Both sides suffered heavy casualties during the Shanghai War. China is estimated to have lost between 200,000 and 300,000 soldiers and civilians, while Japan is estimated to have lost around 30,000 soldiers. This conflict is also known as one of the "Three Great Atrocities" committed by Japan during World War II, along with the Nanjing Massacre and the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
The Shanghai War depicts the brutality of war and the suffering experienced by the civil society during the war period. This conflict was also the beginning of the Japanese colonization and occupation of China during World War II.
