Schindler's List is a 1993 historical drama film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Keneally. The film tells the story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who owned a factory in Krakow, Poland during World War II, and how he saved over a thousand Jews from death in concentration camps.
Schindler initially cared little for the Jews, seeing them only as a source of cheap labor for his factory. However, after witnessing the terrible treatment the Jews received at the hands of the Nazis, he became inspired and began taking action to save them.
At first, Schindler paid his Jewish workers very low wages, but he later began providing them with adequate food and medical care, even smuggling dietary supplements for them. He also paid bribes to avoid sending Jewish workers to concentration camps.
After the Auschwitz concentration camp was opened, Schindler decided to move his factory to a small town far from the camp. He managed to bring in over a thousand Jews by applying to use them as labor in his new factory.
Schindler worked with his Jewish advisor, Itzhak Stern, to save more people. He used his money to buy fake ID cards and provide fake jobs for people who were at risk of being sought out and arrested by the Nazis. He even asked the Nazis to move his Jewish workers to a work camp near his factory, where they would be safer.
At the end of the war, as Soviet troops approached Krakow, Schindler decided to escape with his Jewish workers. He gave them his gold ring as a farewell gift and spoke to them, telling them that they had become his family. After separating from them, Schindler was captured by Nazi troops and nearly executed, but ultimately escaped and survived.
After the war, Schindler felt guilty for not being able to save more people. He lived in poverty for several years and eventually died in 1974. However, Schindler was awarded Righteous Among the Nations status by Yad Vashem in 1962, and became one of the most revered figures in Jewish history. The 1993 film Schindler's List has been considered one of the greatest films of all time, winning seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
