VCE Chinese Second Language listening section exam tips

1. As per the requirement, you are not allowed to write during instruction time (roughly 1-2 minutes), however, most students didn’t realise you can touch/use your bilingual dictionary during instruction time. You need to quickly look up the vocabulary or words you don’t know in the questions.

2. Highlight key words in all questions before the recording starts. All listening questions will be in the following format: what, where, when, how and why. You also need to identify the names and gender of the speakers in the dialogue so that you know where the answer is when a particular person starts to talk.

3. Take notes, take notes and take notes while the recording is playing for the first time. Do not attempt to answer the questions once you hear the answer from the recording. If you start writing down the full answer for question 1 you will miss all answers for the following questions as the recording keeps going. Take vertical notes. Use whatever language you can write fast, symbols, pinyin anything help you to revisit and recall the key points.

4. During pause, transfer short answers on to answer space.

5. Use a different colour pen to add more notes or complete notes or double check notes during second playing.

6. Complete all questions according to the requirements in the correct language (some required in full sentences some are not required). Answer in the wrong language will have no credit.
