During the American Civil War, former president John Tyler sided with his state Virginia when it seceded and joined the Confederacy. Of the living former presidents (the others were Martin Van Buren, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan) Tyler was the only one to betray the Union. His decision not only made him hated in the 1860s but also continues to overshadow the rest of his legacy.
