Some users who do a love of video streaming or gaming may find their phones overheating, leading to performance throttling, increased battery wear and tear, or just an uncomfortable device to hold.
In this video we test an entry level clip-on water cooler (~$20 USD) from Aliexpress. Results indicate it does slightly help a Pixel 4a, although there are many other phones out there would might benefit from it even more.
This water-cooler included the pump, reserve canister, led lights, usb cable, tubing, and cooling block. If curious, the link I purchased from: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10050...
To test, I had 7 videos playing back VDO.Ninja streams from the Pixel 4a, each encoded with VP9 /w PCM audio, attempting to push the Pixel to its limits. Frame rates improved a bit and the temperature reported by the internal battery reduced 3'C. Packet loss caused by WiFi did not improve.
Noise levels were low, but audible. If the pump was kept at a distance from the phone, or enclosed in a box, it might not be picked up by the microphone.
Another idea to cool your phone though is to just mount a large copper or aluminum heatsink to the back of the smartphone, but where is the cool factor in that?
