In this experiment, we’ll explore the science behind why icebergs float and why about 90% of them are submerged underwater. It’s all about density, which is a fancy word that tells us how much stuff is packed into a certain space. Think of it like this: if you have a bag of feathers and a bag of rocks that are the same size, the bag of rocks is heavier because it’s denser.
First, we’ll take a ball of ice and put them in a bowl of water. What do you think will happen? Will it sink or float? As we observe, we’ll see that most of the ice is underwater, just like an iceberg! This is because ice is less dense than water, so it floats, but not all the way on top. This is why about 90% of an iceberg is submerged, leaving only the tip visible above the water.
