Love Bug of the House: Ann's Story

Although Ann can speak, she usually communicates her needs non-verbally.
She uses a wheelchair and lives in a group home in Hawthorne, California.
Ann’s conditions allow her to be dual-eligible, meaning she qualifies for both Medicare and Medicaid.
In this CatchLight film produced by MediaStorm and made possible in part with support by Arnold Ventures, photojournalist Isadora Kosofsky documents Ann’s life as she and her caretakers navigate her medical and social needs as a 72-year-old woman with a developmental disability.
While having two forms of government health insurance is not without its complications, it has also allowed Ann care such as in-home doctor visits and transportation to medical appointments she would otherwise not have access to.
Most of all, as Kosofsky captures in touching moments throughout her work, Ann’s health insurance has allowed her to live amidst a network of care providers who embrace their role with a deep sense of commitment and personal care.
Darlene, who runs the group home, has known Ann for many years.
“If the clients could take care of themselves and do all of the things that we're doing for them, they would,” she said.
Darlene told Kosofsky that Ann considers her care providers her family.
“The thing that sticks out the most about Ann is how loving she is,” she said.
