Venus is the planet that is like Earth's twin, but things have gone horribly wrong and it is a burning hot mess. The surface of the planet is 462 degrees Celsius, and its carbon dioxide atmosphere is 90 times thicker than that of Earth.

But NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) says that Venus may have been very different in the past. It may have had shallow oceans and surface temperatures that made it possible for people to live there for up to 2 billion years. Scientists have been interested in Venus ever since Phosphine, an element that is made by living things here on Earth, was found in its atmosphere.

Now, a launch company in New Zealand called Rocket Lab is paying for a private mission to learn more about Earth's twin planet.
Rocket Lab will send a probe to Venus in May 2023 to look for signs of life or a place to live in Venus's sulfuric acid clouds. This will be the first private mission to Venus to find out more about life there. Rocket Lab is working on the mission with Professor Sara Seager of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and other well-known planetary scientists.

The Rocket Lab probe that will look for organic chemicals in the clouds of Venus will only be 40cm in diameter and weigh 20 kilograms, with just one kilogram of science payload.
It will take about three minutes to move through Venus's atmosphere and reach the clouds at 45–60 km altitude. There, it will use a low-mass, low-cost auto fluorescing nephelometer to do science work for five and a half minutes (AFN). After about an hour in Venus's atmosphere, the probe will have 20 minutes to send the information back to Earth before it hits the surface.

Nearly 40 years have passed since the last measurements made on Venus while it was still there. In 1985, the Russian Vega missions had both balloons and landers. Vega 2's balloons drifted a third of the way around Venus, gathering important information about the atmosphere. Since then, there have been about 30 missions to Venus, but none of them went beyond orbit and into the atmosphere of the planet.
The spacecraft will take five months to get to Venus, and if it takes off in May, it should get there in October 2023. In January 2025, there is a second chance to launch.
