In Return of the Jedi, we saw Darth Vader make his final choice. He lifts the Emperor, hurls him into the reactor, and saves his son. But the effort destroys his life support. Luke removes the mask, and Anakin Skywalker dies redeemed. That moment ends the Sith. The Empire falls. And the galaxy begins to heal.
But what if Vader survived? What if he lived through that night, scarred, weakened, but alive? In this version of the story, that’s exactly what happens. And nothing turns out the same.
Let’s begin.
The Death Star was falling apart,
fire raining down from above as Luke dragged his father across the hangar. Anakin’s breathing rasped, shallow and broken after taking the Emperor’s lightning. In the movie, we know what happens, Luke removes the helmet, Anakin dies peacefully, and Luke escapes alone. But in this timeline, Luke makes a different choice. He sees life fading from his father’s eyes, and in desperation he places the helmet back on, reconnecting the life support systems. It’s just enough to stabilize him.
Anakin, weak but alive, is lifted onto the shuttle.
The explosions rock the bay as Luke pilots them away. For a moment, Luke thinks it might be too late, but then he glances over and sees his father’s chest rise again. The galaxy’s greatest villain had cheated death.
On the surface of Endor, celebrations raged. Ewoks danced, stormtrooper helmets were drums, and the Rebellion rejoiced in their impossible victory. But Luke wasn’t there. He was flying toward the forest moon, unsure of what to do next. His father was alive, but barely. Where could he take him? How could he explain this to the people who had suffered under Vader’s rule? If the Rebels saw him, they’d shoot first and ask questions later.
Still, Luke made his choice.
He landed on Endor and called for Leia. “I need you,” he said, his voice heavy. When she approached the shuttle and saw who was inside, her heart stopped. There he was, the man who had tortured her, destroyed her homeworld, and haunted her every waking thought.
“He’s alive?” she spat, barely containing her fury. “Luke… you brought him here?”
Luke pleaded with her. “Leia, he’s not the same. He saved me. He destroyed the Emperor. He’s dying, and if he lives, he can give us information about the Empire we’d never get otherwise. Please, hear me out.”
Leia turned her face away. “Don’t pretend this is just about the Rebellion. He’s your father.”
“He’s yours too,” Luke answered quietly. But Leia shook her head. “That man is not my father. He’s Vader. And if the Alliance sees him, they’ll kill him on sight.”
Luke’s jaw tightened.
He knew she was right. But he also knew he couldn’t let his father slip away. After a long silence, Leia finally exhaled. “I’ll contact Mon Mothma. But don’t make me regret this.”
Within hours, transports landed and Rebel troops surrounded the shuttle. Fifty blasters leveled at one figure: Darth Vader, staggering forward with Luke at his side. The soldiers flinched, some even shouting in horror. “That’s him, it’s Vader!” But Luke raised his hands. “Don’t shoot. He’s unarmed. He saved my life. He killed the Emperor. You can trust me.”
Reluctantly, the Rebels lowered their weapons,
though their eyes burned with hatred. Vader was placed in heavy restraints and taken aboard a Mon Calamari cruiser. Medical droids worked around the clock to stabilize his ruined body. His life was no longer in danger, but the man who once commanded fleets and destroyed worlds now lay powerless, chained to a bed.
When Mon Mothma arrived, she was flanked by Leia, Han, and Chewbacca. Her voice was sharp. “Darth Vader, you are charged with crimes against the galaxy, the destruction of the Republic, the formation of the Empire, the deaths of countless innocents. Do you deny these charges?”
For the first time, Vader spoke. His voice was low, mechanical, but different. “No. I do not.”
The room went silent.
Even Han, ready to tear into Luke for keeping this secret, blinked in surprise. But Mon Mothma pressed forward. “Then know this. Any information you give may spare you execution. Otherwise…” She didn’t finish the sentence, but the meaning was clear.
Luke stepped forward, trying to hold the room. “This isn’t just Vader. He’s Anakin Skywalker, my father. The same Jedi who fought in the Clone Wars, the hero who saved worlds. He’s done terrible things, but he’s not lost. He can help us. And we need him.”
