O passi sparsi: a sonnet by Pertrarca, set to music by Sebastiano Festa, arranged for lute by Albert de Rippe.
In loving memory of my father Ilan Golani who passed away on March 21th at the age of 85.
O PASSI SPARSI (English translation below)
O passi sparsi, o pensier' vaghi et pronti,
o tenace memoria, o fero ardore,
o possente desire, o debil core,
o occhi miei, occhi non già, ma fonti!
O fronde, honor de le famose fronti,
o sola insegna al gemino valore!
O faticosa vita, o dolce errore,
che mi fate ir cercando piagge et monti!
O bel viso ove Amor insieme pose
gli sproni e 'l fren ond'el mi punge et volve,
come a lui piace, et calcitrar non vale!
O anime gentili et amorose,
s'alcuna ha'l mondo, et voi nude ombre et polve,
deh restate a veder quale è 'l mio male.
Canzoniere 161
O SCATTERED STEPS
O scattered steps, O vague and busy thoughts,
O fixed memory, O fierce desire,
O passion powerful, O failing heart,
O eyes of mine, not eyes now, but fountains!
O leaf, which honour illustrious brows,
Sole sign of double worth, and best crown,
O weary life, O sweet error,
That make me search the lone plains and hills.
O beauteous face! where Love together placed
The spurs and curb, to strive with which is vain,
They twist and turn me so at its sole will.
O gentle amorous souls, if there are any in this world,
And you, naked spirits of mere dust,
Pause and see how great my suffering is.
