In the early 13th century, the Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan began its expansion into China, taking advantage of fragmentation. The Mongols systematically conquered northern China, capturing the Song capital of Kaifeng in 1234 and establishing the Yuan Dynasty under Kublai Khan. Kublai Khan completed the Mongol conquest of China in 1279 after defeating the last Song ruler, marking the first time in history that China had been unified under non-Han Chinese rule. The Yuan Dynasty introduced major administrative and economic reforms, including the establishment of the Silk Road trade network and the use of paper currency. Despite their foreign origins, the Mongols adopted many aspects of Chinese culture and governance, allowing for a period of relative stability. The Yuan Dynasty eventually collapsed in 1368 due to peasant uprisings, economic troubles, and growing resentment towards Mongol rule.
