Photographing in a forest is difficult. Usually, because of the chaos, you can't see the forest for the trees...
However, photographing in a forest has many ADVANTAGES: you can find beautiful compositions in every season, think of the bluebells in April, mushrooms in October/November; autumn colors, snow-covered bare trees, mist with a summer morning sun, etc.
You also don't necessarily have to photograph at sunrise or sunset. The leaves protect your photo from overexposed, steely blue or gray skies and can often create beautiful SUNSHARPS.
In this video, I take you on a two-day forest walk.
During the walk in the KLUISBOS forest, I wasn't able to shoot much B-roll because the light changed so quickly and I had to be quick to capture beautiful compositions. During my second walk in the LIVIERENWOS forest near the Dutch language border, I was able to dedicate more time to the actual TUTORIAL WITH TIPS & TRICKS.
Along the way, I read, heard, saw... and applied these 5 TIPS to find beautiful, interesting, or fun compositions in a forest.
Not always easy or earth-shattering... but practice makes perfect.
Here they are all 5 in a row:
1. Look for the "atypical," the EXCEPTION, ... that breaks the chaos or regularity.
2. Try the 360° RULE with your camera.
3. Use your TELEPHOTO LENS more often.
4. Create dimension in the photo by ZOOMING IN ON DETAIL IN THE FOREGROUND.
5. Work with different LAYERS.
