What is High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)?
HPLC is a form of column chromatography where a sample mixture (analyte) is pumped through a column packed with stationary phase using a solvent system known as the mobile phase. Separation occurs based on how each analyte interacts with the mobile and stationary phases, producing reliable, high-quality chromatographic results.

What is Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC)?
UHPLC technology uses smaller particle sizes under 2 µm to achieve higher efficiency, faster separations, improved resolution, and greater sensitivity. These smaller particles require instruments capable of handling extremely high backpressure and optimized system volumes to maintain performance. As a result, UHPLC instruments were specifically engineered for these demanding conditions.

Because UHPLC instruments are costly, many scientists want UHPLC-level performance on their existing HPLC systems. Phenomenex addressed this need by introducing 2.6 µm Kinetex Core-Shell Technology columns in the late 2000s, delivering UHPLC-like efficiency, speed, and resolution on traditional HPLC platforms.
