It's well worth the cost to pick up a few of these to put in your bag. They take up minimal space and cost less than $10, so I wouldn't leave the house without them.
You could use a standard plastic or garbage bag, but these are so much better. The cinch on one side of the bag makes it perfect for tightening around the barrel of your lens, keeping everything completely dry except the lens's front element. When properly cinched down, it won't blow off, even if it's windy.
Look up "camera rain cover" online, and pick up a few to have in your pack at all times!
