Hi Geospatial and Climate Enthusiast!

On this video, I explore the change in Indonesia's only glacier in Puncak Jaya, in the island of Papua. This glacier is also known as Cartensz Glacier. From multiple research it shows that it has been decreasing dramatically. This video and script will tell you how to map it and do it yourself using public data such as Landsat and NASADEM with Google Earth Engine.

Script: https://code.earthengine.google.com/e...

I use Landsat 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9 to generate satellite imagery from 1990 to 2024 with interval of 5 years. Using its multispectral bands, I generated Normalized Difference Moisture Index and Normalized Difference Snow Index to get the glacier cover/mask. From all the glacier every year, I can generate the change overtime also calculate how many glacier are gone by periods.

The result shown that this glacier has gone very dramatically from 195 in 1990 to mere 7 Ha in 2024. That is 96.5% loss or 12% per year loss. This shows how bad are climate change affecting our earth. Glacier is very important on adjusting our earth climate and sea level, with its demise, expect a very bad condition on our earth in the future.

I hope that using my videos, you can do this analysis by yourself for your project and research.
